International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition (iGEM)

Founded at MIT in 2003 and now run by the independent iGEM Foundation, the competition challenges multidisciplinary student teams to conceive, build, and test synthetic biology systems over a summer, contributing new parts to the public BioBricks registry. Culminating in the annual Jamboree—typically held in Paris, over 400 teams showcase their innovative projects and vie for medals and special awards
Eligibility Criteria for iGEM
Open to student teams in categories including Undergraduate/Overgraduate, High School, Entrepreneurship, and Community Lab divisions.
Teams generally include 10–20 student members and faculty or research mentors.
No prior iGEM experience is required—novices and interdisciplinary participants are welcome
