HLON 2025: Himalayan Computational Linguistics Olympiad – Decode the Future

The Himalayan Computational Linguistics Olympiad (HLON) is an annual national competition organized by the Language Technology Kendra (LTK) to identify and nurture Nepal’s brightest minds in computational linguistics and artificial intelligence. Students in grades 8–12 compete in problem-solving challenges that blend language analysis with computational thinking. Top performers represent Nepal at the International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL) and the International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI).

Eligibility Criteria for HLON

  • Open to students in grades 8–12 (or equivalent) from all examination boards in Nepal.

  • Gap year students who have not yet joined college are also eligible.

  • No prior knowledge of linguistics or programming is required for the Computational Linguistics Olympiad.

  • The Artificial Intelligence Olympiad requires prior knowledge of programming and a background in computer science.

How to apply for HLON

  1. Register online through the official HLON website.

  2. Choose between the Computational Linguistics Olympiad or the Artificial Intelligence Olympiad.

  3. Pay the registration fee:

    • Standard Registration: NPR 500 (until February 28)

    • Late Registration: NPR 1000 (March 1–5)

  4. Prepare by reviewing relevant materials and practicing problem-solving techniques.

  5. Participate in the national round on the scheduled date.
