Beamline for Schools (BL4S)

Country: International
Category: Competitions

Launched in 2014 to mark CERN’s 60th anniversary, BL4S is a global outreach initiative where student teams prepare experiment proposals using accelerator beamlines. Selected finalists gain access to world-class research facilities—performing their own experiments at CERN (Geneva), DESY (Hamburg), or ELSA (Bonn). Since its inception, over 17,000 students from more than 70 countries have participated, and winning proposals are selected based on scientific merit and safety feasibility

Eligibility Criteria for BL4S

  • Teams must be composed of high school students aged 16 to 19 at the time of proposal submission. Students under 16 may participate anonymously or with parental consent, but cannot travel to CERN or partner labs.

  • Minimum team size: 5 students; Winning teams can include up to 9 students plus 1–2 adult supervisors for the lab visit.

  • Teams may be from one school or multinational, and must prepare a full experimental proposal and outreach or video submission
