Eligibility Criteria for MEXT

  • Nationality: Must be a citizen of a country with diplomatic relations with Japan.

  • Age:

    • Undergraduate: Under 25 years old (typically born after April 2, 2000).

    • Master’s/PhD: Under 35 years old (typically born after April 2, 1990).

  • Academic Background:

    • Undergraduate: Completed 12 years of school education.

    • Graduate: Bachelor’s degree for master’s, or master’s degree for PhD.

  • Language:

    • Japanese language is not required before applying, though recommended.

    • Must be willing to learn Japanese if selected.

  • Health: Must be physically and mentally healthy.

How to apply for MEXT

  1. Check the Japanese Embassy Website
    Visit your country’s Japanese embassy website to download the application form and check deadlines. Example: Japan Embassy in Nepal

  2. Prepare Documents
    Typically includes:

    • Application Form

    • Academic transcripts

    • Medical certificate

    • Recommendation letters

    • Field of Study and Research Plan (for graduate-level)

    • Certificate of graduation

  3. Submit to Embassy
    Send the required documents by post or submit in person, depending on the embassy’s instructions.

  4. Written Exam & Interview
    Shortlisted candidates will be invited for a written test (usually in English, Math, and Japanese) and an interview.

  5. Final Selection by MEXT
    Those who pass the embassy screening will be recommended to MEXT in Japan for final approval.
